A bantam is any small variety of fowl, usually of chicken or duck. Most large chicken breeds and several breeds of duck have a bantam counterpart, which is much smaller than the standard-sized fowl, but otherwise similar in most or all respects. A true bantam chicken is naturally small and has no large counterpart.
Bantams are adaptable and can be found in various environments where domestic chickens are kept, including urban backyards, rural farms, and homesteads. They are quite hardy and can thrive in a range of climates but benefit from protected housing. Because of their small size, they are often kept in smaller coops or aviaries.

Bantams are miniatures of standard chickens, typically about one fifth to one quarter the size. They are popular for backyard chicken keepers and exhibition. True bantams have no large counterpart and are naturally small.
