The Appenzeller Spitzhauben is a Swiss breed of crested chicken originating in the historical Appenzell region of Switzerland. It is one of two chicken breeds from that area, the other being the Appenzeller Barthuhn; the only other Swiss breed of chicken is the Schweizer.
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben thrives in cooler, mountainous regions and is adapted to the rough terrain and variable climate of the Swiss Alps. It does well in free-range systems where it can forage extensively. It is less suited to confined indoor environments, preferring space to roam.

Confinement Tolerance
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben does not tolerate confinement well, as it is an active breed that thrives on foraging. It prefers to roam and explore its environment freely, making it ill-suited to small, enclosed spaces. Adequate space is essential for their well-being.
