The Chantecler is a Canadian breed of dual-purpose chicken, reared for both egg and meat production. It was bred in the early twentieth century at the Oka Agricultural Institute in Oka, Quebec, and is the only chicken breed originating in Canada. It is characterised by close-fitting feathering, a small or vestigial cushion-shaped comb and small or vestigial wattles, all of which make it more resistant than many other breeds to the extreme cold of the Canadian winter.
The Chantecler is well-suited for cold climates, particularly in Canada. It thrives in farms and backyards where it can be sheltered from extreme elements. It is adaptable to free-range environments, though care should be taken to provide shelter during severe weather conditions.

The Chantecler is known for its resilience to cold climates, making it an ideal breed for northern regions with harsh winters. Its close-fitting feathers and small comb help reduce the risk of frostbite. It was developed to be a hardy dual-purpose breed, able to provide both eggs and meat efficiently.
