The Fayoumi or Egyptian Fayoumi also known in Egypt as Bigawi is an Egyptian breed of chicken. It originates from—and is named for—the governorate of Fayoum, which lies south-west of Cairo and west of the Nile. It is believed to be an ancient breed.
The Fayoumi chicken is well adapted to the hot and dry climates of Egypt. It is commonly found in rural areas and small farms throughout Egypt, particularly in and around the Fayoum region. The breed is also raised in various parts of the world where it is used to improve the disease resistance of local flocks.
Ease of Keeping
Beginner friendly: 4/5
The Fayoumi is known for its hardiness and resistance to many common poultry diseases. It matures quickly and is often used in breeding programs to improve the health and vigor of other chicken breeds. While they are not particularly prolific egg layers, their resilience makes them valuable in challenging environments.
